BE FIT (Bray Emmets Fun In Training)

Monday, March 18, 2013

The grand finale of the BE FIT programme took place on Saturday, 16th March in beautiful sunshine in Shanganagh Park with a 5K run. This was the completion of a ten-week programme run by Bray Emmets GAA Club. It was a Bray Emmets version of Operation Transformation and the brainchild of PJ Cunningham. BE FIT stands for Bray Emmets Fun In Training and fun it certainly was. 65 people joined up the first week of January and trained three times a week. Activities during the week included circuit training, boxercise, unihockey, aerobics, pilates, zumba, yoga and every Sunday morning there was a walk/run in various local locations. The 5K participants were joined by family and friends and the winner, Anna Clarke, the 12 year old daughter of BE FIT member Catherine O'Malley, came over the line at 24 minutes and 14 seconds. Anna just pipped BE FIT member Ruth Bowers who was very closely followed by Marie Curran.  Our youngest competitor was six and a half month old Callum, Debbie McDonagh's grandson and he completed the course in his pram! People joined BE FIT for a number of reasons. Some to get fit, others to shed a few pounds but all came to have a bit of fun. Everyone achieved their hope and a presentation was made to the "biggest looser (of weight)" Pat Lee, the former Senior Hurling manager - the current senior selectors could well have a new impact sub to bring on in the Championship if Pat keeps up the training! A big thanks to all our coaches who gave their time willingly and for free. In particular we must mention those who came every week and motivated the participants: Rosemary O'Grady for her excellent warm-ups; Paul Cunningham who motivated people to achieve much more than they ever thought they could; Ron Mooney and his pal Eddie put us all through our paces with military precision; Peter Duggan and Sean Adamson who introduced us to many new activities.  Due to popular demand, it is hoped to run another BE FIT programme shortly and naturally, we'll keep you posted of any developments.
