Wonderful Bray Minors win County Final with scoreline ; Bray Emmets 3-9, Carnew Emmets 2-8.

27 July, 2008

Bray Emmets kept the golden era of Minor Hurling within the club going in Arklow  on Sunday when Lorcan Pratt, the proud captain of Bray Emmets, lifted the Tom Cooney memorial cup for the fourth time in five years.

Bray simply blew Carnew away in the first half.  This Bray team was the first hurling team to qualify for the All Ireland Feile in 2004 as Wicklow sent two teams and we were the second team. Carnew were the feile winners, won the U12, U14 and U16 with our lads as bridesmaids so this was a sweet victory. For some of the 18 year olds this was their day and they knew it, right from the start Paul Cunningham won the first 2 balls and we were on our way, the other real minors such as Gearoid O'Murchu, David Houghton and  Lorcan Pratt were in the thick of things and really getting stuck in and winning every battle.  We opened with 2 points from Tom Cash and O'Murchu before Carnew got going with a point. We were awarded a 65 which Dara Maloney struck well and appeared to be going over for a point, however the ball dipped and the Carnew keeper failed to hold the sliothar and we were 4 points up. We went on to lead at half time by 2-4 to 0-2. Tom Cash crashing in a great goal before the break. Playing Hugh Douglas at centre back worked a treat as he stopped everything going down the middle and he made some fine full length interceptions and block downs. Ronan Cunningham held the Carnew danger man, nd he  quietly and efficiently got everything out of danger. Killian Molloy in the other corner kept his man quiet also. Our half forward line of Eoin Brazil, Aaron Shortt and Tommy Hamil kept the vaunted Carnew half backline, some of whom are playing senior, completely out of the game.

Carnew came out fighting in the second half and got a goal to leave 6 points in the game, however, Tommy Hamill then scooped the ball to the Carnew net after his initial effort had been saved and we were again well ahead. Carnew rallied in the 4th quarter and scored another goal but Mikey Lee made 2 great saves at this point and Carnew were struggling. Meanwhile Gearoid O'Murchu was hitting points from all angles and some superb long range frees to keep Bray ahead.

Bray had stars all over the field and the right tactics for the day with John Henderson playing deep from his corner forward spot leaving lots of room for Cash (1-2) and O'Murchu (0-7) inside. John was great under the ball and kept Carnew pinned in their own half. Some of the balls played in by himself, Paul Cunningham and David Houghton were a joy to watch with the inside players coming on to top class possession. Mikey Lee's puck outs and general play was outstanding as was Gearoid O'Murchu who shaded man of the match from Paul Cunningham and John Henderson.
