Wicklow Football Feile

26 April, 2008

Bray Emmets competed in the Wicklow Feile on Saturday last. We were drawn in a group with St Nicholas Dunlavin and St Patrick's Wicklow. We were based in Rathdrum and played St Nicholas in the first match. There was incessant rain and a breeze on a heavy pitch which was hard on our smaller players We started slowly and conceded an early goal which can be a disaster in a 15 minute half. We lead at half time by 0-5 to 1-1. We took the game to Nicholas's in the second half and won by 2-7 to 2-3.

Our next game was against St Pats and this was a tough dour contest where we dominated , hit the crossbar and did everything except score. We managed a draw at 0-4 each and that got us a place in the semi final in Ashford against Rathnew so we piled soaking wet children into the cars and headed to Ashford where the weather was dry for the first half. Again we started slowly and gave away a goal against the run of play. However the lads gathered themselves and were ahead at half time by 0-5 to 1-1. In the second half we stepped up our game and won by 1-7 to 1-2. We were now in the final and playing better as the day went on, the weather was easier on us in Ashford where our players could move the ball better in the drier conditions.
Meanwhile St Pats had remained in Rathdrum and beat Greystones by a big score in the other semi. Again we piled the soaking children into cars and headed for Rathdrum where the rain was now a downpour. We had a horrible start when we conceded a goal almost from the throw in but we fought on and led at half time by 1-2 to 1-1. Again we conceded a goal at the start of the second half followed by a point however we rallied again and scored a great goal. Again we laid siege to the Pats goal and the keeper was beaten but the ball stuck in the mud on the goal line and Pats were saved on a scoreline of 2-3 to 2-2..

Bray had some outstanding displays particularly Jim Doyle at centreback, ably assisted by Muiris O'Flionn at full back, Pierse Sweeney and Diarmuid Masterson at midfield. Daragh Lohan up front showed well for the ball. Top scorer for Bray was Pierse Sweeney with 3 goals and 4 points followed by Cian O'Byrne with 2 goals and 2 points.
We had a great day and our team performed really well playing great football and were very unlucky but we had two matches against St Pats and failed to beat them so they are worthy winners and hopefully will do Wicklow proud in the All Ireland Feile in Cavan/Monaghan . We wish them all the best and look forward to meeting them later in the championship.
