League Game V Glenealy

10 May, 2008

What a game last Saturday. To say it was heart-stopping stuff in the second half is no exaggeration as Glenealy fought back from a 1-9 to 0-0 deficit at half-time. We knew it was going to be tough against a strong breeze and uphill. Great credit is due to both teams for providing such an entertaining spectacle.

Our team got stuck in right from the start and it is fair to say that most of the action was with the centrefield and forwards in the first half. Michael Boland scored some great points from both play and frees. Most possession was won around mid-field and centreback by Peter Conroy, Sean Maloney, and Eoin McCormack who all played brilliantly and put in huge effort. The second half was a different story. Great pressure came on the defenders as expected with some wonderful high balls into the square by Glenealy producing 3 goals in quick succession. The work rate of all defenders including Cathal McAodha, Shane Lohan and Liam Morgan in the full-back line and Gavin Dowling, Sean Maloney, and Sean O'Connor in the centre-back area was admirable and prevented further goals by Glenealy who now looked like a team with a mission. Padraig Doyle came from the forwards to assist. He immediately made an impact, collected and cleared many balls. Liam Benville was playing well in goals and made some very good saves.

With only 2 points now between the teams, some relief came when Michael Boland stormed through a number of defenders and smashed the ball to the net. The pressure on the Bray defenders however continued with a further goal coming for Glenealy. Our defence will need to tighten up significantly for future games as four goals against us is too much. This is something the coaches will be working on with the players in the coming weeks. Michael Boland displayed a brilliant performance scoring all of Bray Emmets 2-10. Bray always had the edge and ended up victorius with a final score of 2-10 to 4-2.

Overall the team is doing very well in the Wicklow games having played 4, won 3, and drawn 1. Training is every Tuesday and Thursday, 7.00 to 8.30. Anybody interested please contact either Dan Boland, 087-2555974 or Christy Maloney, 087-2250852.
