U11 hurlers V Whitehall Colmcilles

9 March, 2013

The Under-11 Hurlers were brought back down to earth with a defeat against a well drilled and skillful Whitehall Colmcilles team on Saturday, 9th March. Due to the poor weather over the last couple of days the match was moved to Whitehall's Astroturf pitch and Bray found it very difficult to get going in the first half. Indeed only for the trojan work of our backline of Hannah, Philip, Tadhg and in particular Rory who made numerous blocks (and literally put his body on the line), Bray would have been further behind by half-time. Failure to gain parity at midfield, where Jack tried valiantly to stem the tide, resulted in constant pressure on the Bray goals where Zack Collins played really well. The introduction of Art did mean that more ball began to get to the forward line of Brian, Aodain, Riain and Ben towards the end of the half.
A stern half-time talk and the players own pride in their team resulted in much improved performance in the second half. Sam took over in goal, he was kept busy, but with his long puck outs and the huge work ethic of the back line resulted in much tighter exchanges. Bray started to get on top in midfield and the forward line began to look much more dangerous with some excellent scores from Jack, Hannah, Ben and Brian making the game a much more even contest. They say that players learn more from their defeats than their wins and if this is the case, then the Under-11's will have learned a lot from their match on Saturday. While the result did not go their way, they can be proud of their performance in the second half.
Special thanks must go Whitehall for their hospitality and in particular their coach Derek who came over to the team and provided some words of advice after the match which hopefully the players will take on board.
Panel: Zack Collins, Tadhg McCarthy, Philip Jakob, Rory Mulcahy, Hannah Surples, Jack Treacy, Sam Kearney, Brian Nesbitt, Riain MacMaolin, Ben Gorman, Aodain Daly and Art Whittle.
