On Wednesday last we played our last game in the Dublin
Hurling Cup away against a strong St Judes side. We divided our
squad into two teams of fairly similar skills and this report
includes one of those teams. Our defenders and goalkeepers had 5
goals scored against them, some of which should have been
relatively easily cleared away. Billy Ray and Michael Pirkl did
some solid work in defence and tried really hard. At midfield Liam
Benville and Seanie Maloney had the better of the exchanges. Liam
put in some brilliant block downs and Seanie scored a beautiful
point from a 45m free. Both midfielders gave good quality ball to
the forwards who unfortunately did not make the best use of it.
Conor Prendergast was the most effective forward and scored a great
goal from a ground ball into the square from Dylan Brady. Indeed,
Conor was in hard luck in not getting a second who was denied by a
brilliant save from the St Judes goalkeeper. Our other goal was
scored by Daniel Kennedy leaving a final score of 5-2 to
2-1.
Meanwhile on the other pitch, our U11s did better winning
by 3-4 to 2-2, leaving an overall score of 7-4 to 5-5 in favour of
St Judes. Overall, the team have done exceptionally well in the
Dublin Cup and came second out of seven in their Group and are now
in the top 10 clubs in Dublin out of approx 40. So well done to all
the players. The Dublin Hurling League starts next Saturday and
having done so well in the Cup we are now pitched against the best
in Dublin. Many challenges lie ahead but this should help
significantly in their development and in improving their skills
levels.
