With an under strength team we took on St. Vincents last
Saturday. We won the toss and decided to play against a very strong
wind in the first half. It was going to be tough as St. Vincents
are one of the best in Division 1 in Dublin. In no time we were 5
points down and struggling. This quickly led to a 9-point deficit.
However our team held their nerve and didn't give up. Padraig Doyle
as usual was great in defence and was well supported by Patrick
Michel. Michael Boland was putting in hugh effort at midfield and
this paid off. He scored some great goals. Suddenly we were back in
the game. We were now exerting tremendous pressure on the St.
Vincents defence and forcing many frees. Michael Boland converted
each one brilliantly. The half time whistle went and we were well
back in the game trailing by only two points.
Now with a strong wind in our backs, our team began to work
better as a unit. Magnificent puck outs by Padraig kept constant
pressure on the St, Vincents defence. Further scores by Conor
Prendergast(goal), Padraig(goal from a puck out), and Liam
Benville(point) gave us an edge. But St. Vincents had some great
talented players and with some brilliant unopposed runs through
from midfield they were bound to score. This they did and
deservedly so, adding on some further goals and points. Our lads
however responded repeatedly with well taken points. A highlight of
the game was some excellently taken sideline cuts with each team
scoring a point from these, the Bray Emmets one coming from
Michael.
The game was tense throughout, and not good for the weak
hearted. The final score, Bray Emmets 6-1, St. Vincents 5-14. Well
done to both teams for providing great entertainment.
