U10 hurling match against St. Judes

11 October, 2008

The teams met up at Old Conna at 9.45am on a sunny but windy morning. The pitches were up behind the Spawell and by the time we got there the wind seemed to pick up even more. The report is from the white team.

Hugh and Neil looked after the white team on the top pitch and the match started at 10.40am. We started off well but spent the majority of the first few minutes under a lot of pressure from Judes who started very strong. Our backs and midfield stood up very well to the pressure with Ronan Browne, Kevin Nolan, Caolan Brady and Ben Hoskin putting in some great tackles and getting stuck in and Aaron Lyons had to make some great saves to keep a clean sheet. After 4 minutes Judes made another break, and despite Ben's best efforts, Judes scored a deserved goal. They then continued their pressure, with Aaron making a great clearance off the line. Two minutes later a high ball came into mid-field and Ronan earned a skill point by tapping it down, keeping the sore to 1 - 1.

The pressure continued with the midfield of Kevin Spaine, Luke Steele and Caolan Brady all having to help out defending. Judes scored another skill point from a high ball into midfield making it 2 - 1. After two great clearances from Ben, and some great battling in the middle of the field from Kevin and Ronan, things started to even out a bit. Our forwards of Oscar DeBurca, Lochlann Dougan and Adam Barry started to see some action at last with more balls making it up to them. After ten minutes the game changed to air hurling, and Judes won a free where Ben made a great clearance, and Ronan followed up with a long clearance up to the forwards. With five minutes to go in the first half Fintan O'Shea and Mark Kenny came on for Adam and Luke who got a well-deserved rest.

In the last few minutes of the first half Mark had a great shot, which went just wide, and Luke, Kevin S. and Caolan got stuck in, in midfield and things started to even up.

The second half started with Oisin Dougan coming in to the midfield, and the pressure started again, with Ben doing some great defending and Aaron making some great saves. Kevin N. and Ronan continued to defend well, but the wind and the hill made for plenty of side lines. After ten minutes, Kevin N., cleared the ball out of defence up to Kevin S. in midfield who moved the ball up to the forwards where Adam and Lochlann narrowly missed scoring. Oisin continued to battle in midfield driving some great balls up to Oscar, Adam and Lochlann. Mid way through the half Ronan made a great clearance to Adam who was closed down before he had a chance to shoot. On eleven minutes Judes made another break down the right and scored making the score 3 - 1.

After twelve minutes Phillip Redmond came on into the midfield, and from a sideline hit the ball to Oscar who created a great chance that just went wide. After another clearance from midfield by Phillip, Lochlann and Oscar both battled well to create another chance that was cleared by the Judes defence. On Jude's next attack, Kevin N. made another great goal-line clearance. The last chance fell Brays way with Kevin S. winning the ball in the middle and passing it on to Oscar who passed it on to Lochlann with Mark taking the final shot just wide.

With that, the final whistle went and the score was 3 - 1 to Judes, but it was a great battling performance by Bray. Well-done lads.
