Clan Na Gael

14 April, 2008

Last Saturday week we had a full panel of 20 as we made the journey to windswept Ringsend to take on Clan Na Gael in football. However our hosts were very short with only 12 players and one pitch available. Rather than have lads standing around on the cold sidelines waiting to be swapped in and out of the game it was agreed that we would loan them 4 players. An all in rather unorthodox sixteen-aside game on a lengthened pitch was played. You would expect chaos to ensue, as go games are normally only 9-aside but the Bray lads seemed to thrive on the occasion.

Clan Na Gael opened the scoring by taking advantage of some full back line confusion but that was all they got out of the first half except for a few skill points. Meanwhile our lads started to turn the screw and a toe poked scrambled goal settled out lads and we clocked up another goal, a point and some skill points to leave us with a 7-4 half-time lead. In the second half, with the wind to our backs, and our midfield and defence supplying generous amounts of ball into our forward lines we started to clock up the scores. Man of the match on the day was Stephen with 4 extremely well taken points from the half forward position.

This Clan Na Gael team beat us by a single point last October but last Saturday they simply could not cope with the relentless tackling and pressure applied by everyone of the Bray lads. Final score was a victory for Bray 27-5.
