Senior Hurling Championship 6th July 2009 It was lovely summer's evening in Arklow for the senior hurling championship match between Bray and Arklow Rocks. Bray had a good victory against Avondale the previous week and as Avondale had beaten Arklow already, hopes were high for a Bray victory. Arklow started well and displayed some great teamwork, however Bray were threatening and had a lot chances. Unfortunately the chances were not all taken. It was all to play for and at half time there was little between the teams. In the second half there was a spell of very competitive hurling. It looked like Bray had the measure of Arklow with fine displays by Christy Moorehouse who went on a scoring spree, with a final tally of 1-4. Arklow however were not to be outdone and played with great commitment and supported each other and ended up winners by two points. There were some great individual displays by Bray especially by Colm MacEoin who had a masterful display at full-back. In fact the whole fullback line of Colm MacEoin, Ronan OBrien and Eoin Brazil performed very well especially in the second half. The lack of match practice was evident in some of the Bray players and this game will help. There is no replacement for practice and training all of which was evident in the performance by Arklow who made great improvement since last year. Bray obviously has the ability but all team-members must put in the work in training. There is still lots to play for and Bray still can progress to the semi-final stage if they perform well in the remaining matches. Let's all give it our all in training and achieve our obvious potential! The final score was Arklow Rocks 1-17; Bray 2-12 Lineout and scorers: Peter O'Reilly, Eoin Brazil, Colm MacEoin, Craig Brack Synnott, Jordan Lee, Eoin Mason (0-5), Ronan OBrien, Peter Kiely, David Haughton (0-1), Mickey Browne, Bill Maher, Gearoid O Murchu(0-2), Tom Cash(1-0), Liam Kenny, Christy Moorehouse (1-4). Subs: Paddy Lee for Eoin Brack Synnott, Tommy Hamill for Gearoid O'Murchu. Senior Hurling Championship 29th June 2009 Bray Emmets 3-12, Avondale 1-13 Bray Emmets Senior hurlers played their second game of the Championship in Arklow against Avondale on Thursday evening. Unlike the first game, conditions were ideal for hurling with a dry sod and sunshine through the whole game. Avondale started in whirlwind fashion and were much sharper than Bray in the early exchanges. They scored some lovely points after good combination work and things looked ominous for Bray. Bray seemed to lack that sharpness and cohesion required at senior level and didn't give sufficient backup to each other. However from that slow start Bray gradually got up to the pace of the game and by half-time had levelled the game 0-7 each. The second half was hard fought and gradually Bray got the upper hand. Liam Kenny scored a goal after a typically never give up run. There were some fine scores by Mikey Browne (0-2), Gearoid O'Murchu (0-2, 1 free) and Jackie Moorehouse who went on a scoring spree in the end with 2-2. While there were positives to be drawn from this game there is a still lot of improvements needed to advance to the next stage. The team obviously has potential, however the hunger shown in stages of the second half must be expressed through the whole game. Good, well attended training sessions are essential to develop that teamwork. Lineout: John Henderson(Goal), Owen Brazil, Colm MacEoin, Ed Keating, Jordan Lee, Eoin Mason, Ronan OBrien, Peter Kiely, Willie Keane, Mikey Browne, Liam Kenny, Jackie Moorehouse, Tom Cash, Bill Maher, Gearoid O Murchú. Subs: Pat Lee for W Keane, Lorcan Pratt for Ed Keating Senior Hurling 8th June 2009 Bray Emmets Senior hurling championship began in atrocious weather in Arklow on Saturday night against one of the top clubs in the county, Carnew. This first round of matches was brought forward to what would normally be the ideal time for hurling however conditions were more like November as the rain fell in floods. The pitch in Arklow however withstood the conditions extremely well and full marks to Willy the ever present grounds man for providing a field in impeccable condition. The vast underdogs, Bray, were missing several players through exams and holiday, and fielded 4 debutants to Senior hurling. Carnew, with such seasoned campaigners as Don Hyland, Joe Murphy and Timmy Collins were too strong and ended as decisive winners. However Bray Emmets can take consolation from the way the team fought through to the final whistle. John Henderson who started his first championship game in goal grew in stature throughout the game. The other debutantes Tom Cash, Owen Brazil and Jordan Lee also played their part and will benefit from the experience of playing at the top level. Carnew's teamwork was excellent and showed all the hallmarks of a team that has played together for a long time with great backup play throughout the field. Don Hyland had a fine game at centre back and contributed some fine scores from frees. While Bray have many hurlers with potential it is clear that they need more games at this level to compete. For Bray lots of very competitive training session similar to Kilkenny's legendary training sessions in Nowlan Park can only bring this team on. They need to really lift their performance as they take on Avondale on Friday night.
Bray Emmets: J. Henderson; O Brazil, C MacEoin, E Keating; Jordan Lee, E Mason, R OBrien; C Foley, P Kiely; C Moorehouse, W Keane, D Murphy; T Cash, L Kenny(1-1), G O Murchu(0-2). Substitutes: W Nolan for C Foley, M Walsh for D Murphy, SENIOR HURLING - LEINSTER LEAGUE Monday 20th April 2009 Summer came to Old Conna on Saturday last and conditions were ideal for the Leinster League match between Bray Emmets and Faughs, the famous old club in Dublin. This was seen as a very stiff challenge for Bray Emmets as Faughs are a Division 1 team from the much improved Dublin hurling world. Unfortunately Bray were missing a number of key players through illness and injury, something that they couldn't afford against such opposition. Faughs lived up to their pre-match billing and put on a very strong first half performance. There were some fine hurlers on view in a team that was clearly finely tuned and prepared to work together. Faughs did a lot of damage in that first half particularly through several goals. Bray fought well but were not used to the high tempo of the Faughs play and took a time to adjust. A few timely words at half time from the Manager lead to a much improved performance from Bray in the second half. Again Faughs class was there to see but a much more workmanlike performance from Bray showed that Bray has the potential to compete at this level. This game was a learning experience and shows the team what is required at this level. The final score Faughs 8-17, Bray Emmets 0-10. Bray lineout: Eoin Mason (goal), Billy Brazil, Danny Eglington, Tadg O'Broin, Diarmuid Murphy, Peter Kiely, Jordan Lee, Ronan OBrien, Lorcan Pratt, Peter Walsh, Colie Browne, P.J Farrell, Tommy Hammill, Christy Moorehouse, and Tom Cash. Subs: Michael Byrne (goal) for P.J Farrell, at half time, Willie Nolan for Peter Walsh, Eoin Brazil for Tadg O'Broin. Bray Scorers: E Mason 0-5, T. Cash 0-2, T Hammill, C Moorehouse and C Browne 1 pt each. |
