Larry Walsh

image9495.jpgOur Club lost one off its greatest gaels when we heard that Larry Walsh had passed away on Tuesday morning 26th February. Larry had been ill for a while but it was still a shock to learn that he would no longer be with us. Of course the greatest loss is to his wife Ronnie and sons, Mark, Brian, Niall, John and their extended family.

A proud Louth man, Larry was involved with every team in the our Club over the years. He was often the first point of contact for new people coming into Bray looking to play gaelic games and even if they weren't looking to play gaelic, Larry would still be encouraging them to become involved with the Emmets. He was manager of the minor football team in 1984 when we won our first minor title in forty years. Larry was proud that his son John was part of that team. Larry's other sons, Mark, Brian and Niall also played for the Emmet's. Larry managed teams at different levels in the club and was involved in many Schweppes Cup wins, a cup that was nearly as important as the championship to teams in the north of the county at that time.

When he finished managing teams, Larry always encouraged young players to play and attended every game. He would get to know their names and offer them advice. He was also a great supporter of Ladies football when it started in the Emmets. He was proud of the new Emmet Park and could be seen there whenever a game was on.

His stature within the club was evidenced by the large turnout of club members, and GAA gaels throughout the county on Thursday evening and Friday morning. It was fitting that the guard of honour was led by two of Larry's old soldiers, Jim Sweeney and Mick Doherty. All of us in Bray Emmets offer our deepest sympathy to Larry's wife Ronnie, sons Mark, Brian, Niall, John and their extended family.

We are currently planning a training schedule in First Aid and drawing up a list of people in the club who already have training in First Aid to ensure that all teams have sufficient cover. If you have any first aid training already could you please let our club Secretary know - Frances Stephenson at 087 2499362
