Senior Hurling Championship

25 August, 2008

The senior hurling championship resumed last week after a three month siesta and since Thursday August 14th the senior hurling team have played 3 rounds. The results, overall, have been very  encouraging. Arklow Rocks were first up and Emmets won by 4 points - people would have expected that, but Arklow were fully confident of winning the game and it was a full blooded championship affair with plenty of incident and effort.

Carnew Emmets, for long the dominant force in Wicklow hurling were next up last Tuesday, and the aim here was to show significant improvement on last year's result (4:22 - 0:04) and while this was achieved though beaten 2:15 - 0:10, the experience gained will stand this team in good stead in the future.

Kiltegan, the hurling force of the 90's, and beaten county finalists in '07, were the opposition in Arklow on Sunday last. We felt we had a good chance of causing an upset and it has to be acknowledged that the team as a whole stood up and gave as good as they got. Kiltegan ran into an early 3 point lead before Bray got going. When Bray scored, Kiltegan hit back with 2 goals and led at half time by 2:05 - 0:07. However, the younger members of this team showed the benefit of the coaching and will to win ingrained at minor level and raised their performance to such an extent that there was only one point in it with minutes to go. Kiltegan's experience told in the end however and they ran out winners 2:14 - 1:14. The young guns who stepped up to the plate and hurled like demons - Peter Kiely, Colm Mac Eoin, Paul Barry, Eoin Mason (8 points), Peter Walsh, Jackie Moorehouse (1:03), Gearoid O Murchú (0-1)- aided and abetted by Paddy Millward, Tadhg O Broin, Danny Eglington, Michael Priest, Ronan O Brien, Adrian Shanahan, Liam Kenny, Bill Maher, Eamonn Furlong, Lorcan Pratt, Killian Foley, Mark Breen, and William Nolan.

Avondale are our next opposition on September 6th followed by Glenealy, and if the progression graph keeps going in the same direction, there are interesting times ahead.

The hurling team wish the Footballers the best of luck against Baltinglass at the weekend.
