Hurlers advance at the expense of local rivals

29 September, 2012

The last day in September, in Arklow and a must win match, we are now at the knock out stage and no second chances, what more would we need to motivate us but the sight of blue & white of Eire Og, who have joined with Kilcoole to form Corbett Gaels in the senior championship. Having already beaten them in the league, this game was always going to be a tight affair, and for the first half was exactly that, Shane (chunky) Nolan pointed from a free and we replied with a well taken point from play by Liam Kenny, Mikey Lee pointed a lovely long range free  to settle us down nicely, however, it was the Gaels that forged ahead with Nolan punishing us for giving away silly frees, six in all and two from play, Christy Moorehouse had added a point in between and Liam another both from play, Daire Lohan came out to the forty and Arran moved in to the corner, with five minutes before half time, Arran Murphy with one of  his trade mark runs opened the Corbett Gael defence, hand passed the ball in to Kenny, who blasted to the net, two minutes later, it was Murphy, Kenny again, a carbon copy of the first goal almost finished for a second goal only for a great block by the corner back. We did get a point from the same attack which left us one point to the good at half time, 1.7 to 9 points. The return of Ronan O'Brien to full back, Kieley the centre back and John Henderson to mid-field was working, Mikey  Browne was introduced at wing back for Harry and was given the roll of marking Ronan Keddy, the Gaels best player by a mile on the day and performed the task admirably , with some great fielding and attacking play .

The second half was completely dominated by us, one change at half time Darragh Maloney on for Luke O'Reilly. Our forwards were getting good quality ball from out the field and from Peter O'Reilly in the goal, they forced Corbett Gaels to give away frees and possession, mid way through the second half Lukie Maloney scored the point of the match from well out the field, and  Mikey Lee added one more from play and four frees, Liam Kenny the man of the moment fired in a second goal, Paulie Cunningham completely out played Billy Cuddihy at centre forward and showed some excellent do or die never give up attitude, Eoin Mason caught some great ball around the middle and put great ball in to the forwards, and  with five minutes to go Christy Moorehouse pulled on the ball to the back of the net after the corner back was blocked down and dispossessed, a case of right man, right place. A total of seven and a half minutes extra time was played in which  Ronan Keddy scored a goal from a free, at the death, the ball finding its way passed a mass of bodies in the Bray goal, the final whistle went, the final score 3.14 to 1.13. We play St Pats next Saturday same support would be great.
