Hurlers take Division 3 Leinster League

27 May, 2012

Another great page was written in our hurling history book, when our senior hurlers won the Division 3 Leinster Club Hurling League in Dr Cullen Park Carlow yesterday, by the narrowest of margins, 2.10 to 1.12. A glorious day with conditions perfect for hurling, we opened the scoring with a point from Mikey Lee, Carnew equalised almost immediately, this was to be the pattern for the first half score for score , Liam Kenny, Eoin Mason Mikey added further points, the scores being level four times. Carnew had been very wayward in there shooting and had several wides. With five minutes to half time Mikey delivered a badly needed goal which made it 1.6 to 6 and the first time we got three point lead. Minutes into the second half we extended it to four with a great score from Gearoid Murphy, we began to take control of the match from here on, and lead by seven points at one stage, points from Arran Murphy, Maso and Mikey. Our second goal  was a great move involving three of our young players, Daire Lohan took on the Carnew defence passed it into Cathal O'Dualachain who fed it into Mikey Lee who finished it clinically to the net giving the Carnew goalie no chance. With only minutes remaining Carnew to their credit made a great attempt to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, with a goal followed by two points, leaving only point in it, but it wasn't to be enough. After four minutes of injury time the referee blew the whistle, we had just done enough and escaped with the victory. Martin Skelly, Chairman of Leinster Council presented the shield to the non playing captain Christy Moorehouse, who made a great speech, thanking all involved.

The hurlers would like to wish Owen Brazil a speedy recovery from injury, also, we would like to thank Frances Stevenson for all her hard work in making this day a memorable occasion for all our young hurlers, Brenda Maloney and Siobhan Egan, the physiotherapist.
