Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-final

8 October, 2016

Bray Emmets v Arklow Rocks (replay)

It was back to St Pat’s of Wicklow town, last Saturday 8th Oct 2016 for the replay against the Rocks and after a minute silence for Margaret Byrne the game got underway. Having rode our luck the first day, getting an equaliser with the last puck of the game, it was imperative that we brought our A game on this occasion. It was Arklow though that opened the scoring with two points on the board before Willie Keane and Tim Devine brought us level, Darragh Maloney having missed a free beforehand. Arklow again went in front with free and Paddy Lee levelled with a free also.

Michael Walsh had to retire with a shoulder injury and Shane Lohan came on to replace him. Lohan was only on the pitch when he fired over a lovely point and was looking very lively in the corner. It was TJ Byrne again that caught a long ball in and eventually rounded Enda McHugh for a well taken goal, the number of steps was very questionable. Back came Bray but try as they might just couldn’t get the ball in the Arklow net, Liam Kenny, Tim, Darragh Maloney and Michael Walsh before he went off, all missing good goal chances in this half, however it was a good half for us with intensity level well up on a fortnight ago, the score at half time 1.3 to 4 points for the Rocks. Sean Maloney took up marking TJ and Paul Barry moved up on Tiernan Mellon. The second half saw Bray push forward and really take the game to the Rocks, Willie Keane was powering his way through the Arklow defence and was rewarded with a well-deserved goal when he blasted the ball past the Arklow goalie. Liam Kenny was having one of those days that although he was catching everything inside he just couldn’t find the net with one of them. Arklow came back at us again and levelled, Paddy put us ahead again Darragh also fired over and slowly but surely we were grinding them down, Brian Duggan came on for Paddy and Ed Keating for Matt.

Tim Devine had now stepped up a gear and his two goals in the last quarter put pay to the Arklow challenge. Shane Lohan again popped up with a lovely run through the middle to fire over his second point and put seven between us. Arklow needed goals at this stage and Conor McNally who started his first intermediate championship match was in no mood to let anything pass, Jordan Lee was outstanding and Cathal Reddin back to normal, Karl Lacey ran himself into the ground as usual, so it is another county final and the double-double is still on, Kiltegan are waiting for us in the final, should be a cracker before the senior game next Sunday 16th at 1.15. The final score 3.7 to 1.7.
