Intermediate Hurling Final

17 October, 2015

Well it was all roads to Arklow on Saturday evening for intermediate hurling final against Arklow rocks. Could we emulate the seniors and bring home the Sean O'Farrell cup to Bray, making it a clean sweep of the top two hurling league and championships for 2015. Indeed we did just that, running out winners on a score line of 3.14 to 3.7. We started this game with a great point only seconds after the throw in from Liam Kenny, quickly followed by a free from Tom Cash, Paddy Mellon then added a point from a free for Arklow, Willie Keane, Barry Cunningham got off the mark with points from play, and were starting to run riot through the Arklow back line, Tom Cash was deadly on the frees and from play as we eased into a commanding lead of 8 points to 4, our backs were completely dominant and only for a few handy frees, it could have been a lot worse for Rocks who just couldn't make any head-way through the Bray half back line of Matt Thompson, Peter Conroy and Cathal Reddin, then just before half time Liam Kenny gathered the ball, ripped through the Arklow defence and blasted past Keith Barns in the Rocks goal, Lorcan Pratt finished the half with a lovely long range point to leave the half time score 1.9 to 5 and looking comfortable having played into the wind.
We began the second half with a fine goal from Tom Cash, straight from the restart, before the Arklow mentors had even made it to the dug-out, Nikki Sweeney came on for Luke O'Reilly and before long it was 2.12 to 5 points, Shane Lohan came on for Ryan Tynan, however there was to be one last twist to this game and with ten minutes to go Ti Byrne Arklow's ace forward flicked the ball to the Bray net for a very good opportunist goal, this was quickly followed by another goal from the same player and the Rocks were ending with a great rally, meanwhile Seanie Maloney had to come off with a bad injury to his ankle and Matt. Thompson received a somewhat harsh red card. Ed Keating came on for Sean, Craig Brack Synnott for Peter Conroy, the game had suddenly become exciting, Dara Maloney "captain supreme" delivered a long puck out which Liam Kenny plucked for the air, handed it to Lorcan who handed it to Tom who blasted past Keith Barns yet again and this was surely game over but no! back came Arklow and that man again TJ Byrne caught another ball on the edge of the square and fired in another goal past Dara, Tom Cash added few points but it was too little too-late for Arklow, the final whistle blow and Bray were champions. Many thanks to all the supporters who travelled down, as we ended the year on a very good note, also many thanks to Brenda Maloney (nutritionist), Colm McDonagh (kit), Olan Savage (trainer), Cameron(Physio), Harry Stevenson(stats) Willie Cash(sel), Mick O'Byrne(sel), Jackie Napier (admin), all the hurley & water carriers, John and the senior management, our sponsors Matt Britton.
